Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that developed Viagra (sildenafil), has (MHRA) to reclassify it’s erectile dysfunction (ED) drug from prescription-only to ‘P’ (Pharmacy). This would allow pharmacies to sell sildenafilwithout requiring a prescription’.The move would be made in line with the purpose of this article:reducing the number and severity of prescription-only prescriptions by 90%, as well as other ED drugs.
The company, whose current name isPfizer,didnot receive any documents from the ICH (Lower Intimate Health) agency on the reclassification, as required by 21 U. S. federal law
The reclassification would be an important step in reducing the number of prescriptions filled for erectile dysfunction, which affects up to450 million men globally. It would also be important in achieving this goal by reducing the number of ED drugs prescribed to men. The reclassification would also be important in achieving the benefits that are expected from a 90% reduction in the number of prescriptions for sildenafil without a prescription.
The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) would be the first regulator to reclassify sildenafil (Viagra) as a pharmacy-only medication. Previously, Viagra (sildenafil) was only available through pharmacies.

Update 6 March 2024The move by Pfizer to reclassify sildenafil (Viagra) as a pharmacy-only medication was taken after a major study in humans revealed that it was associated withan increased chance of treating erectile dysfunctionby 70-80% in a large sample of men aged 40-60 years.
A study in 1998 identified men who filled 90% of their prescriptions for sildenafil (Viagra), and ‘covered 90% of the list’ of men eligible for the P card.
Researchers measured the effect of the drug on blood levels of sildenafil citrate (as P-classical sildenafil) in 22,076 men aged 40-60 years, using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). After a median follow-up of 6.8 years, Viagra 100mg was most effective in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men aged 18-64 years. Men who filled 90% of their prescriptions for sildenafil (Viagra) had an increased chance of getting ED by70-80%
